My true love gave to me.....Gift of the Magi! After all, the Three Wisemen did arrive with their gold, frankincense, and myrrh on the Twelfth night. In honor of that and it being my final day, I am opening my 2009 Lost Abbey Gift of the Magi. I first tasted this brew last year for the Twelve Beers of Christmas, and the brett influence was surprisingly restrained. I am looking forward to seeing the progression of this special holiday brew. Lost Abbey 2009 Gift of the Magi, 10% ABV: Amber caramel color. The brett is still subdued, and bear with me here, is almost elegant. Yes, elegant.Lovely liquid caramel (think when you are drizzling that liquid decadence over your favorite ice cream), toasted malt, nuts, apricot, the slightest hint of citrus, and oak. The woodiness is undoubtedly more evident on the palate. There is a little hop nudge in there amongst the light caramel.
With time, the fruits turn to candied. Vision of sugarplums are dancing in my head. Except sub out sugared apricots and oranges. Becomes sweeter on the palate, and brett makes up the 2/3 to finish. A little heat. A complex, interesting, and expertly made beer. (Tasted over a period of one hour.)
So there we have it my beer comrades! So let's sing together now in hoppy holiday harmony! (Yes, I took care to make sure everything fit!)
On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me.....Gift of the Magi, Noel de Calabaza, Santa's Little Helper, Santa's Private Reserve, Great Lakes Christmas Ale, Sierra Celebration, Santa and his Sleighr, Hoooome for the Holllllidays....Bands and Wreck the Halls, Three French Hens, Two Yulesmiths, and One vintage Christmas Ale!
HAPPY NEW YEAR to all and to all a good night.
