On the Third Day of Christmas....

My true love gave to me....Three French Hens! Really! So, not the actual birds. I don't rightly what a French Hen is. Even better, Three French Hens is the 3rd annual from The Bruery in Placentia, California. Yes, my friends, there was a Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. And they were DELICIOUS. It is exciting to see such a project unfold, and I admit there was a hint of girlish glee when I found out it would be served at dinner I was attending.

That exceptional meal was a Brewmasters Dinner held at Stone with The Bruery's Patrick Rue and Port Brewing's Jeff Bagby. An exceptional duo, for sure, there was NO way I was missing this event. An incredible lineup of 5 courses paired with beers from both breweries, it was a tour-de-force of aromas and flavors. We all spun on gastronomic tops as we ate and drank our way through the deliciously decadent evening. The Bruery Three French Hens 10% ABV: This is a 75% Belgian-Style Dark Ale with 25% Ale aged in French Oak barrels. In fact, all of the beers in this incredible series will be modeled in the Belgian Strong Ale style. Aimed in simplicity, this beer allows The Bruery's house Belgian yeast strain and the oak aging to come to the forefront. The first batch was aged for 8+ months in magnum wine barrels, and was then blended into each subsequent batch.

Dark aromas and flavors of dried fig, raisin, and dates alongside oaky, woody notes, candi sugar, yeast, and baking spice. Dark rum, red wine, and caramel notes dance the waltz through the palate. Will they still be sashaying for me when we get to Nine Ladies Dancing?

The blending involved with Three French Hens gives the beer balance and a lovely, layered complexity. The Bruery has made a fine addition to their lineup, and one I definitely plan to enjoy several more times throughout the holidays.
